Zhangzhou Pien Tze Huang is the result of the development of a formula that was traditionally prepared by an imperial physician during the Ming Dynasty (around 1555 AD). According to historical research, toward the end of the Ming Dynasty there was a rebellion within the imperial court. During this time, an imperial physician managed to escape while carrying the secret recipe of Pien Tze Huang to the Zhang area (now known as Zhangzhou). The physician then hid in Pu Shan Si Temple and became a monk.
The monk, who was originally an imperial physician, followed the secret imperial recipe and added medicinal ingredients, eventually creating a tablet medicine capable of relieving heat, toxins, pain, and swelling. At that time, many residents living around the temple suffered from various illnesses, and the monks used this medicine to heal them. This marked the origin of the name Pien Tze Huang, which in Chinese means Pien (tablet) and Huang (to cure inflammation). To this day, Pien Tze Huang continues to be produced by a pharmaceutical manufacturer in the city of Zhangzhou.
Over time, Zhangzhou Pien Tze Huang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has grown and been listed among the top 100 enterprises in Fujian Province, as well as one of the top 50 companies in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.
